Google Granted Patent For Driverless Car “Landing Strip”

As some of you may know Google has been testing driverless cars for a while now and this patent application is an extension of that work. In this recent patent application the road marking, in this case a QR code identifies exactly where the vehicle is parking [more accurately than GPS or on-board sensors could summise] to give the vehicle more of an idea of context in which is parked.

As people in the comment point out this would be a target for funny people coming in and modifying the codes in ‘amusing’ ways. More in depth explanation of the patents on BBC News.

It important to remember the patents are often defensive to prevent others from snapping them up, and that the method illustrated is not guaranteed to appear exactly as shown.
